Strauss, Richard (1864 – 1949)
A superb signed and inscribed 8.25″ X 11″ portrait (photograph size 6.5″ X 9.25″) by Richard Strauss. The composer inscribes to a Mr. Grassir Diaz and adds the date, 1920. He adds a three-bar musical quotation from his most famous work, Also Sprach Zarathrustra — writing out the opening musical fanfare made so famous by Stanley Kubrick in 2001: A Space Odyssey. He identifies it above the musical annotations as ‘Zarathrustra’.
Neatly laid down to card, and in very fine condition. Of the utmost rarity in this format.
Extremely rare and desirable in this format. This is the first time, in 30 years of dealing, that we have encountered a musical quotation by Strauss of this opening motif — the lone trumpet rising notes, the dramatic brass fanfare, then the back-and-forth timpani — surely one of the most famous segments of classical music ever written.
