Description

Gandhi, Indira (1917 – 1984)
‘The only real satisfaction is to be able to do something for others’
A good typed letter signed, ‘Indira Gandhi‘, New Delhi, 18th December 1975, to Dr. Ben B. Braude, on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister´s House.
Gandhi states that she is deeply touched by the sentiments expressed in her correspondent´s letter and continues to remark that ‘the only real satisfaction is to be able to do something for others. All my life I have been involved in public causes and have also tried to help individuals who did not seem to have any other support. But one seldom gets any sincere appreciation. Truly it has been said that generosity is the ability to accept ingratitude!’ She goes on, ‘I often have the urge to write on a variety of subjects. How I wish I had the time to do so. Some books have been published but they are collection[s] of my speeches’. Gandhi concludes by informing Braude that she has asked her office to send him some reading material which may be of interest, and sends her good wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
In fine condition.
