‘I would never allow myself to be worried by the anxieties of a parish priest’

An interesting typed letter signed by Graham Greene 7th July 1960.

The author writes to Miss Hill, opening, ‘I would certainly not worry too much. I think there are very few Catholics nowadays who pay any attention to the Index — indeed there is a theory that as it is not published in England it is not meant to apply. Newman, in his book The Idea of a University is a great support for the freedom of writers. Certainly I would never allow myself to be worried by the anxieties of a parish priest, or fail to write anything which was not written for reasons of sensationalism and which didn’t worry my own conscience.’

A one-inch tear to the top edge, with light creasing, other fine. A few hand corrections added by Greene.

A very interesting note that relates, perhaps, to A Burnt-Out Case, published in the same year in Sweden, but not published in England until the following year, 1961.
