Richthofen, Manfred von (1892 – 1918)

An extremely rare signed sepia 3.5″ X 5.5″ postcard photograph by Manfred von Richthofen, the most successful flying ace of World War One. The Red Baron is shown in a head and shoulders pose wearing a cap and overcoat, and with his Pour le Merite medal (‘Blue Max’) proudly displayed around his neck; number 503 from the series of World War I aviator postcards published by Willi Sanke.

Signed in fountain pen ink by Richthofen with his name alone at the base of the image, partially across a slightly darker area although perfectly legible. Authentic signed portraits of Richthofen are extremely rare as a result of his death at the young age of 25. Some slight traces of former mounting to the verso, otherwise very fine condition.
