Orczy, Baroness (1865 – 1947)
About a Scarlett Pimpernel bed…
A good autograph letter signed by Orczy (‘Emmuska Orczy’), April 26th 1938. The author writes to ‘dear Arthur’ to thank him for sending a money order. She goes on, ‘I cannot tell you how pleased and touched I was by your letter and your gift towards the Scarlett Pimpernel bed in the Victoria Memorial Hospital. I can assure you that your money is more precious to me than the gifts of my rich friends. We hope by next year to see a patient occupying the bed which your generosity is helping to endow. The little as well as the big all go to help in that way, and when a British patient too poor to pay expensive nursing home fees is being cared for and made well entirely free of charge your name will be one of those which will go up to God asking for a blessing upon you.’ Letter folds, with tiny tears to central fold, and edge creasing, otherwise fine.
