Montgomery, Bernard (1887 – 1976)

‘There are times when one has to obey orders, even if one does not like them’

An excellent one-page autograph statement by Montgomery, dated 21st November 1968, titled ‘Message to the BLESMA (the limbless veteran’s charity) Dinner: 6 Dec., 1968’.

He then writes, in full, ‘I want to tell you all, many of whom were probably my comrades-in-arms on the battlefields of Africa and Europe in Hitler’s war, and possibly also in the 1914/18 war, how very sorry I am not to be with you tonight. But I have been specially asked to take part in the Defence Debate in the House of Lords on  Thursday December 5; it will be a late night sitting and very tiring. My doctors will not allow me to be out two nights in succession; after all I am now 81; there are times when one has to obey orders, even if one does not like them. Perhaps we may meet on some other occasion later on. Meanwhile I hope you will have a pleasant reunion dinner, and may you all have the happy homes you so well deserve., Montgomery of Alamein F.M.’

In very fine condition.
