Hockney, David (1937 –     )

A good autograph postcard signed by David Hockney, circa late 1960s or early 1970s (indistinct postmark).

The artist writes on the reverse of a 4″ X 7.5″ postcard showing Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis dressed in drag from Some Like it Hot. In full, ‘We thought you might like these postcards for your mantelpiece, love David.’ Additionally signed by his then boyfriend, Peter Schlesinger (‘Peter’). Schlesinger was the subject of one of Hockney’s most famous paintings, Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), which sold for a record $90.3m at Christie’s in 2018.

Light age-toning, and a few slight smears to the ink on the address panel. An interesting association piece. Together with a long letter of provenance written by the recipient of the postcard.
