Hillary, Edmund (1919 – 2008)

A typed letter signed by Edmund Hillary in fountain pen ink, ‘E. P. Hillary’, 30th July 1953, just weeks after climbing Mount Everest. He writes on British Mount Everest Expedition 1953 headed paper to thank Mr. Hillyard for his ‘kind congratulations’. He goes on, ‘Unfortunately I am returning to New Zealand tomorrow, but would otherwise have liked to take advantage of your invitation to see something of commercial honey production in England.’ Vertical fold, otherwise in fine condition.

Letters by Hillary written so close to the date of his historic climb, and making reference to it, are scarce.
