Dahl, Roald (1916 – 1990)

‘I must get on with this Charlie book’

A scarce typed letter signed by Roald Dahl, ‘Roald’, 28th October 1971, to Blanch Campbell of Campbell’s Book Store in Los Angeles.

The author asks his correspondent to send him the new Rhyming Dictionary by Burges Johnson — ‘the one that has words across the page.’ He goes on to note that he foresees no trip to Los Angeles at present.Dahl then write, ‘I must get on with this Charlie book I am trying to hard to write.’ Signed boldly in ballpoint pen, adding, ‘Send me a bill.’ Slight age-staining, otherwise in fine condition.

Letters by Dahl that mention his most famous fictional character are rare. Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator was published in 1972.
