Courbet, Gustave (1819 – 1877)

A scarce signed approximately 4.25″ X 2.5″ carte-de-visite portrait by Gustave Courbet. Signed boldly beneath his image in fountain pen ink. Additionally signed by the artist to the reverse, adding ‘condamné à 6 mois de prison et 500f d’amande’ (condemned to six months in prison and a 500 franc fine). In fine condition, with adhesion marks to the reverse. Signed photographs of Courbet are quite rare.

An interesting reference here by Courbet to his arrest in June 1871. This was for the artist’s alleged role in the destruction of the Vendôme Column following the defeat of the Paris Commune.
