Churchill, Winston (1874 – 1965)

Churchill draws a pig — blindfolded? — with other Prime Ministers and notables

An extraordinary and unique approximately 6″ X 5″ autograph album featuring many signatures, the vast majority accompanied by drawings of pigs by the signees. This is in line with a trend that began in the late 1800s, whereby the signer of an autograph was asked to draw a pig whilst wearing a blindfold, later popularised by Arthur Conan Doyle in his collaboration with George Bernard Shaw, Famous People’s Pigs, Blindfold! (1943).

The present album features pencil pig drawings by four British Prime Ministers: Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George, Stanley Baldwin and Arthur Balfour. Other signed drawings appear by Edmund Allenby, Earl Beatty, William Morrison and Charles Galton Darwin (grandson of Charles Darwin), plus an extremely rare autograph (and pig drawing) by Eric Liddell (1902 – 1945), who was later immortalised in the film Chariots of Fire.

The front cover of the album has become separated, with many pages rather loose. Many pages have a vertical crease through the centre. Otherwise in fine condition. An amazing collection of signatures.
